Koreans' immigration to Canada has begun from 1967 when Canada government had opened door to colored races. The number of Korean immigrants to Canada has increased from the 1970s.
With these historical background, literary enthusiasts founded Korean Canadian Writers' Association(KCWA) in 1977. Although at first KCWA was begun with 8 members including Lee, Seok-hyunt, now the number in membership comes to 130. Especially from the 2000s the member of KCWA increased to over 100, not only because the budding writers showed up steadily through Literary Contest in Spring which has begun from 1978 but also because the existing writers came in according to the immigration increase. 75-80% of members lives in Toronto, and the rest lives in Vancouver, Alberta, Montreal, Manitoba, Windsor, etc. Speaking of genre, the most writers worked in poetry, and then in essay, novel, juvenile literature, etc.
Their main activities were the publication of Korean-Canadian Literature and participation in Literary Contest in Spring. Korean-Canadian Literature published volume 13(2007), and 122 writers appeared to 2009 through the Literary Contest in Spring under the joint sponsor of Korea Newspaper.
KCWA is the biggest organization representing Korean-Canadian Literature, but there are Vancouver Writer's Association in Vancouver, Calgary Writer's Association in Calgary, Edmonton Writer's Association in Edmonton.
Korean-Canadians made the literary organization KCWA earlier than Korean-Americans. The literature centering on the first-generation Korean immigrants should be mature by writing serious agony about their own identity or their realistic wall as a minority race in Canada. They should pass over the nostalgia about their mother country and the immigrant's sense of alienation. In addition, it is the time to reflect Korean-Canadian literature over 30 years and think about how to hand over their culture to the descendents. And they should be able to have an influence on the main current of Canadian literature through an official language of Canada. They need strategy and attitude to make use of their own cultural personality and merits, which is the new writing material that cannot be written in main Canadian literature, like the life of a marginal man as Korean-Canadian, the cultural mix from combination of Korean culture and Canadian culture, their dual identity, vague boundary, and the marginality.
Korean-Canadian literature tends to reenter the Korean literary world according to the expansion of exchange between Korea and Canada, and they have published the literary works in Korea. These phenomenon can make the Korean-Canadian literature outskirts of Korean literature. Korean-Japanese literature, Korean-Chinese literature, and Korean-Russian literature have formed their own literary world. Now it needs to be considered seriously whether the excessive exchange between the Korean literature in America or Canada and the Korean literature has positive effect or not.
