Drawn from the conception of 'authentic achievement' developed by Newmann and his colleagues(1996), this study explores student and school level factors influencing high-school students'authentic achievement. Different from the previous research, this study conceptualizes high-school students' achievement into students' positive attitude to education and disciplined inquiry which refers to the use of a prior knowledge base, striving for in-depth understanding rather than superficial awareness, and expressing one's ideas and findings through elaborated communication. Data for this study comes from the 4-year general high-school student, household, and school constructed by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training. Using the 2-level Hierarchical Linear Model, this study found that parents' learning-focused supports rather than test-oriented supports positively influence students' disciplined inquiry. Secondly, the findings of this study show that students' disciplined inquiry and students' attitude to education are affected by school level factors, such as class and school climate as well as student level factors (such as expected education level, total hours for learning). Interestingly, this study found that students in a school that adopts grouping by ability tend to decrease the level of disciplined inquiry. This study suggests that conceptualizing students' achievement into authentic achievement(such as disciplined inquiry or high-order thinking) beyond students' test scores can contribute to a better understanding about the role of public schools for improving students' achievement.
