Bilingual writing in the colonial times has been under heated argument for recent years. The overlapping and split between Korean/Japanese identity which is symbolized by bilingual situation was discussed as an escaping element in the nation-ordered world, and a possible alternative to the traditional empire/colony relationship. Although the implication of such a position is not articulated enough, its political dissent from previous views which is based on the nationalistic belief is self-evident. However, the demand to reconsider Korean literary history in the creole structure of nations and languages has been limited to the late 1930s' and early 1940s'. I would like to investigate 1910s' situation to examine the diaglossia condition in colonial Korea.
Japanese imperial authority had not allowed the autonomous space for the social activities among Koreans in 1910s. The 'premature' characteristic of Japanese empire made itself stand only on oppressive and unsystematic violence, then Koreans' autonomy was not allowed not only for political practices but also for cultural experiments. The patriotic political passion gained wide attention among young Korean intellectuals under such suppressive circumstances, but the desire for the cultural life growed at the same time. The path to realize the desire for the cultural is divided to three way at the language level; Sino-Korean, Japanese, and Korean path was equally possible for Korean intellectuals. Japanese writings are commonly tried among young students while Sino-Korean writings are widely open to Confucian scholars on the basis of 'common letter' of East Asian world. Korean writing explored its way even under the virtual prohibition of the magazines and culture production in Korean language, and made its own norm and aesthetics after March 1st movement. However, it has to be remembered that such a path was not predestined necessity and the situation of diaglossia was embedded at the very beginning of modern Korean literature.
