전횡을 특별한 존재로 수용해서 기존 동제의 외연을 확대하고, 종교적 축원을 극대화하고자 한 민중들의 신앙의식이 작용한 것이라고 할 수 있다.Jeonhoing(田橫) is from Je dynasty who lived in the age of civil wars. This article looks into the situation in which the man is deified in Dongje from Oiyeon archipelago in the western coast in Korea.
Jeonhoing comes out in earnest in the record from the end of Goryeo dynasty. Jeonhoing has received attention from envoys and yangban, Korean aristocrats. As a result, there was a popular rumor that Jeonhoing island was located somewhere in the western coast in Korea at the end of Joseon dynasty, creating a heated argument. In the midst of such social atmosphere, the psychological distance to Jeonhoing island was bridged, thus laying down the foundation for intensifying Jeonhoing faith.
Deification of Jeonhoing was conducted by the folk faith choice of the public, different from the perspective of Confucian scholars. The public didn’t pay tribute to the theft acts of Jeonhoing, but interpreted his acts in relation to the life on islands. In the legend, Jeonghoing is a figure who robbed the ships which transported the grain paid as taxes to save the poor. Jeonhoing is considered as patron saint of the island and served as the deity of Dongje.
Jeonhoing’s deification seems to already have been conducted in the 18~19th century. However, exact time is difficult to be established. Looking at the town history of Oiyoen archipelago or the transmission context in relation to the immigration history may allow us to assume the detailed timeline. The spread of Jenghoing faith wasn’t instant, rather, it seemed to have been gradual.
Jeonghoing is accepted as a part of the traditional transmission of Dongje in the western coast. It is transmitted as a part of Korean Dangje faith, not a Chinese religious faith. The people accepted Jeonghoing as a special figure, expanded the appearance of existing Dongje in accordance with the secular faith of the public who attempted to maximize the religious prayers.
