Stories about faithful women(烈女) were produced in a consistent manner with their contents and forms repeated from early to late Chosun. One of the interesting stories about faithful women in the latter half of Chosun is about a wife who recovered the body of her husband that died in a place away from home and brought it to home for burial. It is interesting because the representation and changes of home reveal cracks in male dominance in the era of deconstruction and crisis, considering that home is the place faithful women return to and related to male identity. Written by Yu In-seok in the latter half of Chosun, Yeolbuyusijeon(「烈婦兪氏傳」) presents home, which the faithful woman brought the body of her dead husband to and guarded, as the desire for the community where Confucian ideology is not yet damaged. Even though there are no men in reality, home guarded by the faithful woman preserves Confucian values. Namwonyeolnyeo(「南原烈女」) by Seong Dae-jung and Gwangbukyeolnyeo(「關北烈女」) by Hong Seok-ju also talk about the stories of faithful women having a funeral. However, the bizarre acts demonstrated by the faithful women having a funeral exhibit cracks in male dominance that produced stories about faithful women beyond the depth of their physical pain. Writings to consolidate male dominance, stories about faithful women ironically depict men whose recovery seems impossible. Written by Yuk Yong-jeong in the late 19th century, Gunincheomososajeon(「軍人妻某召史傳」) describes a lady who traveled from Seoul to Naju to find the body of her husband, who was killed while fighting in a Donghak peasants' war as a member of the government troops. She eventually recovered the body of her dead husband, only to bring it back to home because she found a gold and silver ornament inside his garment. It was the symbol of his dishonest acts. Once she realized the real side of him, she buried his body in Naju and left for Seoul. There was a huge gap between the ideal husband that she thought he was and the real husband. Usually faithful women who hit the road to find the bodies of their husbands to hold a funeral do not have worries or conflicts. Considering that the faithful woman's husband belonged to the government troops of Byeolgigun, the husband who accumulated property in dishonest ways represents the power of the nation that is already corrupt or incapable rather than a greedy man. The discourse to turn women into faithful women continued till the end of Chosun, but there was a diverse spectrum too which was the force in the opposite direction and could not be contained within the typical discourse about faithful women. The blind obsession with faith on the part of women was repeated even after the 19th century, but there were also faithful women who were not captured by the faith ideology and thus went outside or stood on the boundaries.
