The purpose of this study was to investigate depression of custuodial grandchildren focusing on differences across sex of the grandchildren in prevalence and determinants of depression. This study was designed as a survey research using a secondary data set. Data from 98 dyads of a grandmother/grandfather and his/her grandchild were employed. Results showed that the mean of depression of female children was significantly higher than that of male children. Also, female children were 12 times more likely to be depressed at a clinical level than male children. For the male children, higher levels of depression were associated with lower levels of subjective physical health, younger age of custodial grandparents, and longer duration of upbringing by grandparents. For the female children, higher levels of depression were associated with lower levels of subjective physical health, as well as lower levels of quality of relationship with grandparents. Intervention strategies specified by sex of grandchildren were discussed.
