How should we see the phenomenon that Lee, Gwangsoo put the trichotomy of intellect, virtue and fitness before that of intellect, feeling and will which are important hypothesis about human psychology, and the signifier of the personality is either understood or competed in a disparate way on the contemporary literary discourse? By comprehensively surveying the historical change of the word, ‘personality’ which indicates the inner side of human, this paper aims to explain its influence that has given on the development of the Korean literature during 1920s. While the writers such as, Kim, Dongin and Im, Nowol used the word, ‘personality’ in the context of the aestheticism, Lee, Gwangsoo transfigured the principles of the Taishow’s culturalism and inspired the word of personality with the nationalistic disciplines. ‘Life’, a translated word, which has been used favorably by leading writers of the Romantic literature amid holding the human’s inner life sacred, becomes fossilized state as ‘personality’ in the inner side of nationalistic discourse. Even in the novel of Heartlessness, the ‘personality’ was not used such a refined way that the author employed only the words of the inner man (Soksaram) and the true man (Chamsaram) to express the mental and social awakening of the protagonists. Earth (Heulk) is a representative example of the personality in the Lee, Gwangsoo’s way. In this novel, various subjects of desire that violates the personal power of the main character, Heo, Soong, made it impossible to utterly preserve his self-ego. In other words, the characters in the novel cannot exist without being assimilated or desexualized for themselves by the influentially national subject, Heo, Soong.
