Nam, Yeong-jeon is a poet who is currently most notable in the Chinese literary circle. Totem poem clearly shows his poetic characteristics and the direction he pursues and expresses the movement of his poem. Totem poem starts from the longing and wishes for the world that does not exist in an actual reality. He reconstitutes myth and, at the same, dreams of the rightful future looking beyond the present.
Poetic literature of ethnic Korean living in China has grown and evolved for the last 100 years showing various colors and dealing with comtemporary issues. Nam, Yeong-jeon has carried on such poetic tradition. After the 1980s, amid China’s reform and openness, he tried to find new aspects of Korean Chinese poem and his poem, consequently, bears ‘chaos’ and ‘challenges’. Rather than being restrainted in the world of one individual poet, his poem showed aspects of movement that has broad social impacts, which is different from previous Korean Chinese poetry. Through poetic rhetoric, he has drawn social attention and tried to cure social problems.
His poetic movement can be explained with terms like ‘restoration of primitive community through totem poem’, ‘ecological poem’, ‘resistance to civilization’, ‘departure from ethnicity’ and ‘permeation’. Bear totem is at the center of Nam, Yeong-jeon’s poem. Through the restoration of the original world, he wanted to cure the agony of fragmented today’s world. Together with this, the bear in his poem is a medium to confirm ethnic identity. Bear, in his poem, is connected to Dangun, legendary founding father of Gojoseon and a sacred tree. Through the bear, ethnicity and ethnic awareness are infiltrated in his poem.
Though the movement made him a poet of the time, he failed to spread movement in a meaning way, to reveal social problem intensely and to express poetic beauty. Those are cited as his limits.
