‘병합’ 이후 조선 지식인들은 『학지광』 등을 통해 조선 민족이 나아갈 길을 모색했다. 반면 일제는 식민 통치의 ‘정당성’을 『매일신보』를 통해 전파하고자 했다. 이러한 대비된 언론 매체가 공존하는 상황 속에서 이광수는 조선인이 주체가 된 잡지에 기고활동을 하면서 동시에 소설 『무정』을 비롯해서 다양한 논설을 매일신보에 게재했다.
이광수의 평가와 관련해서 1910년대 그의 언론 활동 특히 『매일신보』에 어떠한 글을 발표했는지에 관한 내용이 구체적으로 검토되어야 한다. 왜냐하면 그에 관한 텍스트 분석이 주로 『이광수전집』에 근거하기 있으며, 수록되는 과정에서 일정한 편집(자구 수정, 내용 생략과 삭제)이 이루어졌기 때문이다.
이글에서는 첫째, 『매일신보』에 수록된 논설의 정확한 내용을 확인하고, 1910년대 발표한 글(시, 소설, 평론)을 시계열적으로 분석하여 그 내용이 지닌 의미를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 2차 일본 유학 기간과 맞물리는 이기간 동안 그가 제국 일본과 在朝 일본인을 함께 조망했음에 주목했다. 셋째, 그의 기행문을 당대 일본인의 식민지 조선 인식과 비교함으로써 그가 식민지 조선의 과거, 현재, 미래를 어떻게 이해했는가를 검토했다.
1910년대 이광수를 읽는 것은 첫째, 이광수 개인의 변화 혹은 지속의 의미를 찾는 것이고 둘째, ‘병합’과 민족운동 사이의 긴장감을 확인하며 셋째, 당대 사상사의 지형을 확인하는 작업이 된다.
이광수는 매체 혹은 독자에 따라 차별성을 지니는 글쓰기를 구사했으며, 『매일신보』에 기고한 글에서는 주로 일제의 식민 지배를 전제한 상황 속에서 ‘계몽’을 논의했다. 그리고 1910년대 중후반 글쓰기와 「2.8 독립선언서」 사이에 논리적 ‘비약’이 존재했다.During the 1910s, the Korean intellectuals were looking to find the solutions which show the roads to the colonized Koreans by way of Korean Magazines. However the colonizer Japanese emphasized on their achievements through the Maeil Sinbo. This paper focuses on Lee Gwang-su who wrote many articles and novels both Korean and Japanese media.
Because of his various literary activities, many researchers gave attention to his thoughts’ continuity or interruption during 1910s. But they do not exactly examine his writings for they gave authority to his complete works. These works expecially Maeil Sinbo’ articles were deleted and amended some words.
First of all, this paper reconstructs the original meanings and reassignments articles in chronological order. Second, based on these researches, I examined on his thoughts on both Imperial Japan and the Japanese lived in Korea. Third, his traveling on Korea(expecially on five provinces) is closely connected with Korean’s past, present and future.
After dominated by Japanese imperialism, he describes colony Korea society was developed by Japan. It means that he was direct of indirect controlled by the discuss of modern civilization. In addition, he also considers Korean readers and asserts emphatically their enlightenment. Therefor his writings and thought in 1910s were nearly different from his 2·8 manifesto in February, 1919.
