This study was to examine the transformation and improvement of stow nets technique introduced to Korea by Japanese fishers in perspective of the duration of Korean redlip croaker fishery, which had been one of major traditional fisheries in Korean peninsula. Since Stow nets was introduced from western Kyushu, Japan to Korean peninsula around 1900 in tandem with Japanese colonialism, it has still widely been used for redlip croaker fishery in Korean in contrast to Japan. This study, firstly, examined the characteristics of Korean redlip croaker fishing gears during the late Joseon dynasty such as set nets attached to boats and set nets in shallow waters. Secondly it analyzed how the stow net technique had been transformed and disseminated since it had been invented in a small gulf for catching the fish which Japanese had liked. Finally, this study demonstrated that the transformation of the stow net was the acculturated process for Japanese stow net to be gradually adjusted to Korean traditional redlip croaker fishery practices and to be accepted by Korean fishers.
