In this paper, we examine the role of a global factor and country-specific factors in the capital inflows of major 37 countries in the world. A Bayesian dynamic factor model is utilized to estimate a dynamic factor common to three different types of capital inflows of 37 countries, and 37 country-specific factors common to each economy, simultaneously. To examine the relationship between the importance of the unobserved global factor and macro variables which reflect macroeconomic characteristics of 37 countries, we perform a simple linear regression. The results indicate that overall, the common global factor plays an important role in driving the global capital inflows. Especially, the global factor is the crucial source of volatility of both direct investment and portfolio investment. This paper also finds that the importance of the global factor across major countries' portfolio investment inflows, is affected by the structural variables such as the degree of capital control and the depth of financial market.
