This essay aims to explore the context, meaning, and effect of myth of Christian America by the lens of publicness. Since the 1960s America was divided into two blocs, conservative-right and progressive-left. They took different attitudes to critical agendas such as abortion, same-sex, and prayer in public school. Christian Right is a core of conservative-right camp.
According to Christian Right, postmodernism and secular humanism have been threatening the American traditional morals and values as well as American national identity. Fighting against such a secularism, Christian Right argued that America was founded as a Christian Nation. Therefore they say the laws legalizing abortion and same-sex should be cancelled and prayer in public school should be recovered. During election season many conservative politicians stress that America is a Christian Nation. But, the story of America as Christian Nation was not based on historical facts but reconstructed by arbitrary selecting of historical materials in order to justify ideologically Christian Right’s political purposes. In short, America as a Christian Nation is a myth. These days this myth plays the rolf of threatening the publicness of American society rather than of promoting the common good in America.
