In the realm of urban geography, despite out efforts to overcome dualistic approaches, we are still faced with such binary imageries between the physical and the social, the realistic and the representational, and the natural and the built in understanding different urban geographies. Larry Ford, who passed away in 2009 and had been a professor at San Diego State University for about 40 years, must be one of the scholars who strived to understand comprehensively the city and to overarch such dualism. He was undoubtedly one of notable scholars who promoted an on-the-ground and field-based approach to urban geography. Metropolitan San Diego is his last work before his death, and it deserves special scholarly attention because it well epitomizes his geographic perspective. In this book, he did not specialize or celebrate the ‘local’ of San Diego for the sake of locality itself. Rather, without falling into dualistic discourses of the locality, he grappled with the question of how San Diego’s unique geographies are formed through people’s dynamic interaction with environment and how seemingly realistic geographies actually internalize representational imagery. By suggesting such concepts as ‘lifestyle zones’ and ‘epitome places’, he not only traces back out the historico-cultural geographies of San Diego but also envisions its sustainable future.
