The match has been a survival of a bygone era like a disappearing ignition tool seen at the museum. Now there are no working match factories. Nevertheless, there is not any interest in history of match industry at all in an academic field. The research about Uiseong SeongGyang match manufacturing company conducted by The National Folk Museum of Korea in 2012 is currently the only research available. This research has valuable data that explain Korea’s match industry with automated systems in the late 1970s. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to investigate the early and middle stages of the Korean match industry. In particular, the confrontation of Choseon and Japan, conferences in the match industry before 1945, the actual state of match factory after 1945, match manufacturing process of Daehan match manufacturing company(1948∼1968) divided Changes in Incheon Match Industry before and after liberation from Japanese. In order to state the case of the match industry before 1945, this study mainly focused on the period of Japan’s colonial rule. Japan abused the match as a tool of Choseon’s modernization and economical depredation, before and after 1932 when The Match Industry Control Act was enforced in Japan. An interview method was adapted to describe the reality in 1948 to 1968. The interview took place on 5 separate occasions from Nov. 27th to Dec. 28th in 2003 with the subjects consisting of skilled workers from Incheon Daehan match manufacturing company. It is hoped that this study will be of some help to recognize the forgotten Korean match industry and the workers’ life.
