Many previous studies measured and analyzed the 'fear of crime' to conduct research on the perception of security in the local community. Unlike previous studies, this study directly measured the perception of security in the local community. The purpose of this study was to analyze the perception of community security (from crimes) based on the theoretical discussion used in the fear of crime research.
This study conducted a structural education modeling analysis using physical and social disorders from the disorder model as well as social bonding and informal social control from the social integration model in oder to explain the perception of security in the community.
This study found significant relationships between the perception of community security and all other latent factors. That is, social disorder, social bonding, and informal social control gave significant influences on the perception of community security confirming the previous modeling specifications in the previous studies. However, differently from study hypothesis, physical disorder showed the significant positive relationships with social bonding and informal social control. Still social disorder showed significant negative relationships with social boding and informal social control supporting research hypothesis. The study results implies how important it is for the policy makers to consider social environments in establishing policies for the community security.
