The goal of this research is to illuminate the macro-structures of novel texts by analyzing the chapter titles of novel texts. Chapter title is very different from main title as a part of text structure. Main title is external-subtext but chapter title is internal subtext. The forms of chapter title are not patterned and show diverse variations. In many case, chapter markers are used at the boundaries of chapters in novels instead of chapter title.
Also I present some functions of chapter title; framing for reader, division/combine, foregrounding, independent strategies as a continuum. Chapter title makes frame to interpret a text and it shows some difference from title of newspaper article. The main function of chapter title is division and combine of text. In some particular text-genres like mystery fiction, chapter title performs special functions independently.
