This paper deals with how Marx’s attitude towards method and dialectics evolved over time. Conventionally, method to Marx is the notorious ‘dialectical method’, and regarded as one of ‘presentation’. Against this interpretation which emerged from the 1960s, and has now become one of the main positions in Marxist political economy, this paper argues that Marx’s dialectical method is more than anything else one of ‘thinking’, and that it is in this area that Marx thought he really made difference vis-à-vis Hegel. Therefore, the real problem that tormented Marx when he was about to publicise the product of his thinking, that is, in the process of presentation, was this: how to secure and materialise the characteristics of his thinking superior to that of Hegel? From this perspective, what matters is not observing how Marx’s presentation is dialectical but how it deviates from the conventionally dialectical (Hegelian) way of presentation.
