This study attempted to examine the accumulated results and to seek new directions of research on Korean spoken language (education) in Korean Education as a Foreign Language, and in order to do that, reviewed 19 Korean dissertations and 56 articles, either published in scientific journals or presented at conferences. This study analyzed these 75 articles by year, extracted common themes in the research, and established the following questions that embrace the key words of spoken language research: What is spoken language (grammar)?; What aspects of spoken language can be analyzed?; How can spoken language be taught in Korean language education?; How can spoken language be evaluated? Based on these four issues, the concerns and views of research on spoken language education in the field of Korean language education are presented.
Research on spoken language education within Korean language education began making actual developments in the 2000’s, and has showed a significant upward trend since 2009, which is in alignment with the recent trend of Korean language education that emphasizes communication and practicality. This study was able to draw certain implications while examining the research trend. First, elaboration on the function of spoken language in communication and the acceptance range is needed. Second, although research on aspects of learners’ usage of spoken language and application of spoken corpus has actively been conducted, the themes and range of the analysis were limited; and therefore, further studies with more various and specified research subjects and methods of analysis should be conducted. Third, the purpose of spoken language education should be clarified and specific goals and contents should be described in detail by learners and by levels. Finally, research on Korean spoken language evaluation has been insufficient compared to other areas; as a result, specific principles, tools, and standards of evaluation should be prepared.
