This paper discusses how Japanese Imperialism established and operated the Arsenal in Incheon in the course of converting Korea as a continental logistic base, and mobilized laborers, especially those who were mobilized as students, during the Asia-Pacific War.
Several thousands of Korean laborers were mobilized in the Incheon Arsenal at the time, and a significant portion of them consisted of students. The mobilized students were from three different groups. Upper-class students in elementary schools and students who had recently graduated fell into the first group. The second group comprised a few dozens of collectively mobilized students who were from boys’ or girls’ secondary schools. The last group included again a few dozens of collectively mobilized students from professional schools.
The full year mobilization of students in the Incheon arsenal showed that schools had abandoned the original purpose of education, and served as training institutions for industrial workers and reserve soldiers. This abolishment of formal school education implied the desperate situation of Japanese Imperialism while it cannot imagine future as its defeat was close.
