This paper examines the literary world of the novelist Bang In-geun's detective novel. Out of a total of 90 books he authored, Bang In-geun translated 16 detective novels and wrote 12 of his own, amounting to 28 works of detective novel.
Bang In-geun developed his own detective novel while translating works in the genre by Maurice Leblanc, Emile Gaboriau and Robert Louis Stevenson. He created the fictional detective Jang Bi-ho, whose remarkable adventures played a key role in attracting readers to Bang In-geun’s novels. Works featuring Jang Bi-ho are interwoven in terms of plot and setting, and this can be seen as an attempt to emulate Maurice Leblanc’s Lupin series.
Some of Bang In-geun’s detective novels do not exhibit the typical structure and characteristics of the genre, especially in terms of their omission of the investigative process. In place of typical elements such as inference based on clues, action and thrills, his detective novel is character-driven, with a focus on the passions of love and lust. This focus is not only related to the themes prevalent in popular novels which Bang In-geun assimilated in his later works, but was also influenced by his popular novels of the 1960s, in which the role of the detective disappears and only a world of lust and love remains.
