The purpose of this study is to examine two major female body types; slender and obese, which have emerged as socio-cultural dominant discourse on the culturally-disciplined female body in the period of modern Korean society. Specifically, this study focuses on examining two main discourses. First, it examines the significant cultural background and the ways in which ordinary Korean women have been obsessed with self-body care, a phenomenon that has been rapidly accelerating based on the concept of consumer capitalism. Second, the study examines the ways in which the discourse on obese-phobia, regarded as one of the major social issue around the globe, has urged Korean women to take care of their bodies. Delving into these two body types is inevitable when one undertakes to re-think the dominant discourses on the Korean female body. It is necessary to look at the ways in which the ordinary Korean female body has been regarded as an entity constantly in need of discipline and self-care; yet, the rate of Korean female obesity is the lowest in the world.
