In recent years, ongoing agrarian reforms in Uzbekistan are becoming more oriented to diversification of agricultural production with a focus on the production of fruit and vegetables. In this study technical efficiency of tomato production in the Eastern part of Samarkand region is estimated using stochastic frontier production function. Data for the study were collected from randomly selected 250 private farms in Jambay and Bulungur districts of Samarkand region. Technical efficiency of private farms was estimated independently for two districts. The results of the likelihood ratio-type test showed that data are analyzed better with translog production function in both districts. The mean of technical efficiency of private farmers was 83.0 and 88.4 percent in Jambay and Bulungur districts respectively. These results suggest that private farms can increase tomato yield by 17.0 percent in Jambay and 11.6 percent in Bulungur through reallocation of existing resources. Empirical results indicated that farmer's experience and education are found to be important variables and have negative effects on technical inefficiency and were significant in both districts. Farmers who studied at agricultural colleges or universities are found to be more efficient in Jambay district.
