This article aims to introduce H. Weinrich’s tense theory. This introduction mainly focuses on the book Tempus , in which Weinrich developed his theory about tense. Weinrich’s tense theory, which describes the function of tenses in text, consists of three dimensions. The first is an attitude of speech (Sprechhaltung), in which the speaker adjusts the attitude of accepting the text of the listeners/readers through the use of tenses. The narrative tense directs listeners/readers to accept the attitude of relaxation, and the commentary tense to accept the attitude of tension. Secondly, the perspective of speech (Sprechperspektive) is a feature to inform the listeners/ readers whether the information in the text precedes or follows the occurrence of the event. It is a tense system consisting of three stages of recall on text, zero, and anticipation. A relief(Reliefgebung) is a device for arranging information in text, which divides information into foreground and background tenses, and instructs listeners/ readers to accept certain information as important information and to understand other information in an orderly manner. Additionally, the text score(Textpartitur) is a binary record of the features of various parts of speech in the text. Based on the text score, the text-transition score expresses how the features transit from sentences to sentences, and is one of the mechanisms to secure the textuality.
