The Kitan script, which represents the Kitan language, was created in the 10th century. There are two kinds of script: Large Script and Small Script. These scripts were nearly forgotten for several centuries after the decay of Kitan Dynasty. It was rediscovered through fortuitous excavation of the Kitan emperors’ tombs in 1922. Recent research has been carried out actively, with many new discoveries being revealed.
In this paper, the data of the Kitan Script were fully collated. Generally in this field, identical materials are named differently by different researchers. In order to reduce confusion, identical materials with different names are listed under the representative title.
To introduce the method of decipherment of the Kitan Small Script, the decipherment of Langjun Xingji (1134) was given as an example. As it has a Chinese translation in parallel, it has been regarded as the first key to the decipherment of the Kitan Small Script. Based on such studies, we will have a chance to understand the Kitan language lying beyond the Kitan Scripts.
