This study investigates the main characteristics of final energy consumption by source in India. In order to find out the main driving forces of the common variations, we decompose each energy consumption into common and idiosyncratic variations. The dynamic latent common factor model is estimated by the Bayesian MCMC method, and it is used to find out relative contributions of the macro variables in explaining the common variations. The main findings are summarized as follows. Firstly, except for coal, which is mostly used in the industrial sector, other energy sources such as oil, electricity, and biomass are mainly driven by the idiosyncratic variations, rather than the common variations which are affected by macro variables. Secondly, it turns out that the main driving forces of the common variations of final energy consumption in India are improvements of energy efficiency, followed by the economic growth rate and progresses of urbanization. It is found that they can approximately account for 73.4% of the common variations in final energy consumption by source in India.
