This study examined the segmentation of the residential spaces of foreign immigrants residing in Incheon. During the Japanese colonial period, residential segregation, in which the Japanese nationals, who corresponded to the ruling class, and the Chinese nationals, who expanded the power through commercial activities, agglomerated with their same nationals, appeared clearly. They expanded their residential spaces based on their concessions to occupy areas separated from the residental spaces of other nationals. Since the beginning of the 2000s when international migration became active, residential segregation among Chinese nationals can be identified but no clear segmentation appeared among Japanese nationals, whose population has greatly decreased. Chinese nationals are continuing residential space segmentation while enhancing concentration on certain areas through chain migration utilizing immigrant networks and ethnic networks. Since the middle of the 2000s, Chinese nationals have shown a strong tendency to concentrate on Bupyeong-gu and Namdong-gu. In particular, as the center of distribution shifted from Namdong-gu to Bupyeong-gu due to increases in Chinese nationals, the segmentation of the residential spaces progressed centering on Bupyeong 4-dong, Bupyeong 5-dong, and Sipjeong 2-dong. In addition, the number of Chinese nationals remarkably increased in Yonghyeon 1 and 4-dong, where university educational institutions are located. When the Chinese nationals are divided into those of Korean decent and those of non-Korean decent, those of Korean decent are concentrated further on Bupyeong-gu, while those of non-Korean decent are concentrated further on Bupyeong-gu and the Nam-gu. If the chain migration and segmentation of Chinese nationals continue, the formation of new locality by Chinese nationals, who are foreigners, can be expected in Bupyeong-gu. Therefore, in Incheon of now, features different from those the Japanese colonial period are appearing in that the residential segregation phenomenon among Chinese nationals is becoming clear.
