The purpose of this study is to investigate the transmission patterns and characteristics of family study in the Park family of Muan, who prospered around the Yeongdeok-gun area. It was in the late 15th century when Park Ji-mong settled in Yeonghae that the Park family of Muan started to make connections with the Yeongdeok area. Since then, his descendents expanded the power of their family through prosperity. The status of the family has been established for approximately 200 years over eight generations since Park Ji-mong between the mid-16th century and t he mid-18th century.
This study examined the transmission patterns of their family study with a focus on the lines of Park Ji-mong’s first and third son that prospered around the Yeonghae area in its transmission process, which led to the three following characteristics of their family study: First, the family study of the Muan Park family focused on the Yeonghae area called Little Andong. The family was one of the core members of Yeonghae, whose gentry families, armed with remarkable academic refinement, were as many as those in Andong. Secondly, the family was perfect in both literary and martial arts. It is not a common case that a family would prosper in literary arts after making a start in martial arts, which clearly reveals the nature of the family. Finally, the tradition of the family was to serve the nation with loyalty in a national crisis. This tradition of the family was preserved as they fully performed their duties as military officials during Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and raised an army for justice and were devoted to the Independence Movement during the Japanese rule.
