This study examines how South Korean artists (who were born from the 1960s to early 1970s) sees North Korea. South Korean artists in their mid-career agree with senior artists that division of Korea is a tragedy. At the same time, however, they deals with this divided country in their works in much less emotional way than their seniors.
While older generation delivered sorrow and terror of the Korean War firmly believing in unification of Korea, younger generation highly doubts if images of North Korea on media is real and if what South Korean governors said about North Korea is true. Such doubts were caused by several factors. First, they were born after the end of Korean War yet continuously affected by the aftermath of the war. Second, they have not contacted ‘real’ North Korea, but ceaselessly saw its images on media. Third, they grew up in the fluctuating relationship between South and North Korea.
Works made in this background reveal contemporary South Korean artists’ different attitudes toward this divided country than their senior artists. Younger generation’s perspectives on North Korea will be another research topic.
