Incheon Chinatown is a major tourism resource in Incheon. However, the history of modernity in East Asia has been neglected, and it has become an externally created space to sell nationality as a commodity. This space is the product of the Yang-wu movement that China pursued to achieve modernization. In order to expand the private capital needed for modernization, China settled Chinese merchants on the Korean peninsula and engaged in trade and commerce, it is an important opportunity for Incheon Chinatown. And China built the North Sea Fleet through the Yang-wu Movement. They have recovered their military confidence and intend to strengthen their control over the Korean peninsula and to make Incheon, the closest port to Hansung, the base for its advance.
However, China, which had been fiercely competing with Japan for control of the Korean Peninsula, lost its suzerain rights by defeating the Sino-Japanese War, and the Yang-wu Movement also ended in failure. This has also had a profound effect on the Chinese society in Korea, so that they will hand over the initiative to Japan, even in the trades they mainly engage in.However, after that, import business through Incheon Port was almost done by Chinese merchants. Even after the Sino-Japanese War, the total number of Chinese in Korea has steadily increased. On the other hand, the number of overseas Chinese in Incheon decreased or remained at a certain level. Their composition was mainly composed of workers engaged in trade business or unloading at Incheon Port, and the settlement was exceptionally high.
As such, Incheon Chinatown is a very historical place with the modernization process of China and the restructuring of East Asian order reflected. Therefore, it should become a space of history that can see modern history of East Asia can be seen as another point of view. Incheon Chinatown is not only a tourism resource but also a historic resource.
