This article focuses on Manchuria Graph , a graphic magazine published by the South Manchuria Railway Company from 1933 to 1944, and specifically concerns the photographic representation of the Korean agrarian villages. Manchuria Graph , distributed primarily through the major Japanese metropolitans including Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, aimed at promoting the more immigration of the Japanese people to the Manchuria as well as the state's founding ideologies. The magazine, in particular, has received a special attention mainly because it was led by a well-known pictorialist photographer, Fuchikami Hakuyō. Yet, where the recent studies are mostly concerned with the works of Fuchikami and his art world, this essay pays more attention to the representation of the communal village of the Koreans, one of the nations from Manchuria's Five Races. Among other things, this article examines the ways in which the magazine was influenced both by the graphic publications from the Soviet union and by Shinkō shashin (New Photography) developed during the 1930 Japan as a realist photography, in terms of the magazine layouts and photo-montage techniques. In particular, this article investigates how the visual mechanisms of the photo-montage visualized the Koreans, and re-arranged each ethnicity within the magazine pages.
