This study investigates and documents the existence, role, and function of Geumganggwan, which was established in the 1910s. In addition, this study also examines the characteristics of Geumganggwan and clarifying the relationship between its owner, Kim Gapsun and the Geumgang Pavilion. Contrary to popular belief, the residents of Gongju in the 1910s actively agreed to establish the theater Geumganggwan. The identity of the person who owned the Geumganggwan at the time of establishment is somewhat unclear, but it can be confirmed that those responsible for the maintenance of the area were actively involved. Its consequent management by Kim Gapsun, a theatre magnate in the Choongchung province can also be confirmed. Geumganggwan was situated on Kim Gapsun’s property, adjoining a market which he also owned. Kim Gapsun was able to attempt a complementary relationship between the theater and the market. After Geumganggwan was destroyed by fire in 1930, Kim Gapsun decided to build a new Gongjugeukjang near the old theater location (Jeongmin), and to pursue commercial success by continuing to utilize the synergy of the theater and the market. This paper examines the importance and value of Gongju’s first local theater through an exploration of its history.
