This study shows the strategies of colonial rule and the ruling ideology of Japanese Empire through an analysis of banknote in the colonial Joseon, 1890-1945. The preceding studies have focused on the monetary "system" under colonial economy, but they didn't concentrate on the "money". Because they have considered the money only from the economic perspective. However, money has not only economic function but also political symbol that is reflected in the ruling ideas of Nation State and Empire. In the last decades of Joseon Dynasty and Japanese Colonial era, the banknote reflected "Assimilation" as well as "Discrimination" of Japanese Empire's ruling system and Japanese Empire’s self-awareness in the International Community. The assimilation was used through Japanese Empire’s policy of civilizing Joseon, and the discrimination functioned as a self-governing policy that suits the local situation. The design of banknotes at those times reflected the Japanese Empire's ruling polices of assimilation and discrimination toward Joseon.
