In Korea, the amoral speculator is often portrayed with a woman’s face, as typified by the label ‘Lady Speculation.’ However, this study details the practice of establishing a male-centered normality for investment while pathologizing speculation as a non-normative women’s economic activity. For this purpose, two personal documentaries produced by women directors, Family in the Bubble and My Father’s House, are analyzed, showing that the ‘becoming middle class’ project in Korea has been indispensable to the practice of property speculation by family members. Although the ‘Lady Speculation’ represented a recommended gender role for women in middle-class families, such women have in fact been puppets, set up by the government and financial interests to rationalize the money market. This study therefore calls for careful consideration regarding the “crisis of social reproduction,” through an exploration of the lives of the documentaries’ two families and the women directors.
