This study analyzes the various educational change efforts to respond to future society, suggesting what future fields of educational technology should lead new research and practice, In analyzing the features future society, the new competencies and educational goals, the educational methods for the educational goals of creativity and convergence were divided according to their direct and indirect relationships with the educational goals. STEAM, maker education, creative problem solving, and software education are technology-based educational methods that directly target the competencies emphasized in future societies such as creativity and convergence. Adaptive learning, artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented reality and virtual reality, Internet of Things, and flipped learning are technology-based educational methods that indirectly target the future society’s competencies while supporting acquiring basic subject matter contents. Based on the analysis, the new research and practice areas of educational technology are suggested as follows “development of educational methods for the educational goals of creativity and convergence,” “artificial intelligence based education for customized learning,” “convergence research and development with subject matter education” and “Utilization of maker space for education.” It also extends the scope and level of instructional design among the existing research areas of educational technology, suggesting ‘instructional design principles and model studies for advanced thinking’ and ‘design of educational platforms and school spaces and facilities’ research away from the design of unit classes. Finally, deviating from software-like practice such as instructional consulting in the existing practice of educational technology, it proposes new practice including hardware-like practice such as development of educational platform, practice for designing, utilizing and managing educational facilities, and practice for change and innovation in workforce education methods for creativity.
