Nunchi has been known as the characteristic of Koreans. However, in the view of the fact that Nunchi has been developed due to the collectivist nature of Korean society, this study aimed to investigate whether Nunchi could be applied to Japanese society. Korean and Japanese society are both considered a collectivistic society, and there are characteristics that they shared with each other and differences due to the unique characteristics of each society. In this study, it was assumed that due to the collectivist nature of the two societies, Nunchi would be extracted as a two-factor structure in Japanese society, as in the previous study conducted in Korea. And it was also examined whether the relation between Nunchi, SWB, depression, anxiety, and interpersonal relationship in Japanese college students replicated as in the previous studies conducted in Korea. On the other hand, according to the previous study’s suggestion that the two societies differ in rejection sensitivity, it was assumed that the two societies would differ in rejection sensitivity. Data were collected from 147 Korean college students(26 males and 121 females) and 117 Japanese college students(21 males and 96 females) and analyzed. The two-factor structure model of Nunchi was confirmed by the confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, the two-factor model of Nunchi showed good fit in both countries. And similar to the results of Korean data, Nunchi enhances well-being and reduces depression and anxiety in the mediation of self-esteem, whereas interpersonal relationship was explained directly by Nunchi without the mediation of self-esteem. Rejection sensitivity did not moderate the effects of Nunchi on interpersonal relationship in Korean college students, whereas it did moderate in Japanese college students. The results were discussed.
