In recent years, field placements have greatly expanded in Korean universities, but the details of these programs are not well known. In this context, the purpose of this study was to explore what students experience and construct practical knowledge and meaning from the perspective of students who have participated in field placements. For the study, a four-year university in Seoul was selected, and interviews were conducted with 10 students participating in middle and long-term field placements. These interviews were analyzed through thematic analysis.
As a result of the study, in the new context of field placements, students were showing emotional and cognitive change, as well as stepwise internal changes such as expectation, surprise, adaptation, and meaning making. These students' experiences demonstrate the potential as a learning program for student growth. As implications, institutional improvement should be oriented towards clarifying the nature of the field placement as a curriculum. Field placement programs should be systematically designed to improve the effectiveness of the student's learning experience in all activities before, during and after practice.
