In this article, I looked at the influence of the exile life in Imjado Island, which was a strange land, on the art world of Cho Hee-ryong from a humanities perspective.
He, who lived until age 78, spent about 19 months in exile on Imjado Island at the late age of 63. Although it was a short period of time, the influence of exile on his painting style was great enough for us to evaluate his art world before and after exile. What could have been the trigger on exile, which would never have been good, and on a island separated from land, on Imjado Island where nothing seemed to be there?
In Imjado, a strange place, he took nature as a friend to write poems and draw pictures to find a clue to his comfort. However, the poem could only raise the despair of exile. Suddenly he covered the poem and entered the painting. The poem became a painting and continued into orchids, stones, and bamboo. He discovered nature anew by forming friendships with nature, a place of heartlessness. Drawing on nature that had never been encountered on land, he had to use his own creativity to interpret them anew. As such, the nature of Imjado was the basis of creation for him.
He was consoled by nature and reached the stage of philosophical ripeness where anger and resentment were sublimated. He pictured such a comforting feeling. So the paintings were reborn as paintings that comfort people.
A professional painter met the nature of Imjado and sublimated his painting into a new art through his creativity. He emphasized exceptionally original methods, my own. For him, Imjado's experience was a decisive opportunity to enter the path of true creation. His achievements were the result of the island's nature, its residents, and Cho Hee-ryong's ability to accept it anew.
