This paper examines a shark fishing in Heuksan Island of the mid-20th century. The purpose of this is to record the traditional fishing culture that remains only with memories and knowledge of the past. This study is a salvage ethnography for the shark fishing of Heuksando, which is in danger of extinction, and also is a fish ethnography that focuses on shark. First, as a stage of production, I will examine fishing activities that catch sharks in the 1950s and 1960s. Second, we will look at how to use and sell sharks caught in terms of consumption and trade. During traditional fishing, I also try to understand the lifestyle of islanders and maritime trade between islands and land. Third, I examine the kinds and classification of sharks in modern Heuksan Island, and analyze the continuation and change of traditional knowledge of sharks from the perspective of comparison with the shark classification of Jasan Eobo(1814). Therefore, this study newly reveals the fishing culture of the Heuksando region for shark fishing that has been in existence since at least the 19th century. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to expand understanding and interest in Korean sharks and fishers' culture by expanding the horizon of Korean culture related to sharks, known as the center of the east (south) coast, to the southwest coast region.
