This article explores political effects of televised candidate debates in the 21st National Assembly Elections in South Korea. Past research has shown that the candidate debates have four different effects: psychological cognitive effect, attitudinal effect, participation effect, and selection effect. Using survey data, this paper tests these four different effects. The regression results show a strong relation between the candidate debates and the psychological cognitive effect. On the other hands, the candidate debates have limited effects at the attitudinal and participation levels, and no effect at the selection level. Finally, we discuss what roles the candidate debates play in crystallizing democratic values and norms, and suggest the reform for effective candidate debates.
