This study conducted a meta-analysis to investigate relations between perfectionism and social anxiety. A total of 45 papers published from 2006 to 2019 were included in the analysis. The general characteristics of the paper analyzed were as follows: by study subjects, there were no paper for men only, 2.2% for papers for women only, and 97.8% for both men and women. By age group, research on college students was the most(51.1%). HMPS was most frequently used as 44.4% for the perfectionism scale. As for the social anxiety scale, 29% of the papers were measured as a single scale, and 71% of the papers were used by mixing two scales. The meta-analysis results led to the major following findings. First, perfectionism and social anxiety were correlated and had statistically significant medium effect size. Second, to verify the heterogeneity of the effect size meta ANOVA was conducted, the results showed statistically significant differences according to the sub-dimensions of perfectionism, adaptive/maladaptive perfectionism, perfectionism scale, social anxiety scale, and the group of age. Third, according to the sub-dimensions of perfectionism, ‘Inconsistency’ in APS-R showed the largest effect size, and ‘Doubts about action’ and ‘Concern over mistakes’ in FMPS, ‘Social-Prescribed Perfectionism’ in HMPS, followed by ‘Parental crticism’ in FMPS. But, ‘Inconsistency’ in APS-R was insufficient to be seen as a reliable result, as it had only 3 effect sizes. This study is meaningful that it comprehensively examined the precedent studies of the relationship between two variables according to mutidimensional characteristics of perfectionism. Based on these conclusions, the limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up research were discussed.
