South Korea's suicide rate ranks first among OECD member countries and is one of the most serious countries in the world. According to a limited number of civil servants, the suicide rate of all civil servants in South Korea averaged 7.8 per 100,000 people per year from 2014 to 2018, of which the suicide rate of police officers averaged 19.8 per 100,000 people per year, nearly 2.5 times higher than that of all civil servants.
The study wanted to identify the factors affecting the idea of police officers committing suicide. What are the factors that affect the idea of suicide and furthermore, social support was selected as the modulating factors that can control these influencing factors to confirm the adjustment effect.
The police officers' stress and suicidal thoughts were set as independent variables to identify their influence on the idea of suicide, and logistic regression analysis was used for this purpose. It also identified the adjustment effects of social support in relation to factors affecting suicide thoughts. The analysis confirmed that the stress and depression of police officers had a significant effect on the idea of suicide. In the case of social support, it was confirmed that stress regulates the influence of suicide thought, and in the case of depression, the control effect of social support was not significant.
These findings suggest that one of the many problems facing the police organization is specific, and that it is necessary to further develop policies and research, especially in areas related to police welfare.
