Gunsangeukjang is often known as a descendant of Gunsanjwa, and in previous studies this fact was taken as truth. However, these notes are only errors. The president of Gunsanjwa took part in the management of Gunsanjwa, and Gunsan public opinion led the construction of a new theater to replace Gunsanjwa in the late 1920s. However, Gunsanjwa and Gunsangeukjang were distinctly separate theaters. Gunsanjwa was still in operation even after Gunsangeukjang was fully operated in 1930, and was burned down by fire only in 1932. It is only said that the Gunsangeukjang reopened as CinemaWooil in the future, so this preceding study is a serious defect. Considering the fact that Gunsangeukjang was a theater that represented Gunsan in the open port and was a theater that served as a cultural base in the Jeollabuk-do area, the limitations of these previous studies were an issue that must be supplemented. Therefore, even now, an academic approach to Gunsangeukjang is highly demanded. This study attempted to organize the location, operator, background of establishment, theater facilities, local environment, and historical trend of Gunsangeukjang, and to discuss cultural status and social value. As a result, this study aimed to correct the existing misconceptions and insufficient achievements, and to establish the reality and status of Gunsangeukjang, which existed as the central base of Gunsan and Jeonbuk regions.
