Lee Guede's anatomical drawing note was created in 1951 to teach Lee Jooyoung, a fellow refugee during the Korean War, to draw the human body. Human anatomy, physiognomy amongst races, and phrenology are explained in the drawings, although Lee had nothing but his own memory to rely on. This was because the artistic anatomy that Lee learned from Teikoku Art School in Japan reflects the empiricism science of 19th century Western Europe such as physical anthropology, phrenology, biotypology, and physiology. The lessons he got from those courses can also be found in Lee's figure group painting series. However, Lee did not simply make the series to print out his education. The present paper suggests that Lee's note and his works full of muscular men should be viewed in the perspective of the national keep-fit movement in the 1930s, its emphasis on ideal people, and the struggle of male elites including Lee Yeoseong and Yo Unhyung to realize it through physical education at schools.
