From prehistoric times to the present, the ocean has been both an intersection and a settlement of civilization and culture like the fate in the environment of the Korean peninsula. People living in the Korean peninsula pursued national growth or attempted change via association, distribution, and transport. Meanwhile, there were times of subordination when people focused on limited boundaries and blocked sea routes. There were also times when people’s thought was continent-oriented as they thought that culture comes from the continent. Beginning to understand that cultural transportation and contact occur through the mediation of ocean, people broadened their understanding of the ocean and sought to examine and study the life history of grassroots who depended on the sea for their living.
The Korea Maritime Culture Scholar Convention has diligently produced works for the last decade, and the works should advance into East Asia and the Pacific beyond the Korean peninsula. The time of transition has approached to view and understand things from a cross-cultural perspective. In this sense, our studies of maritime culture should prepare ways to explain obstacles laid before us and overcome such obstacles in both diachronic and synchronic manners.
To this end, multiply divided research departments need to be established. It is necessary to set about 10 general departments that require discussion regularly each year, continuously strengthening the research direction of our studies of maritime culture.
Second, the hosting city of the conference needs to be diversified. As the conference has been held mostly along the coast of the southern-west sea, it needs to be held along the coasts of East Sea and South Sea as well, covering a larger area. Although the hosting of the conference is affected by local governments’ preparations and efforts, it is necessary to actively find ways to receive support at a national level or induce research institutes in public areas to actively participate.
Third, it is time to hold an international maritime culture scholar conference, along with the conference held domestically. The academic value of the Korea Maritime Culture Scholar Convention should be expanded, which has been accumulated for the last decade, to East Asia or the Pacific. Therefore, it is suggested that a domestic conference be held in an odd number year and an international conference in an even number year, or that an international conference be held in every three years.
