Korea consists of three sides of the sea, so coastal villages hold a fenguey rite in hopes of an unpredictable first class of concern and safe passage. Although there are differences in terms and conditions that refer to Pungoje by region, Tteok(rice cakes) are raised as a common offering. In general, Tteok has an important meaning in any ritual. In addition, Tteok as an offering, whether inland or coastal, are placed at the center of the rite, taking on great significance.
This paper selected only shamanistic rite performed by shamanic gathering in Maeulgut(village ritual) in coastal area to examine the pattern of Tteok raised on the rite and grasp the meaning structure. Of the Byeolsingut, Dongramitteok and Bandaegitteok of Seohaean Baeyeonsingut & Daedonggut, Yongtteok of Donghaean Byeolsingut, Goridonbantteok of Jamsugut are made directly by shaman and villagers. Dontteok, which is offered to Josang-sang of the Namhaean Byeolsingut, is handmade in the rice cake house.
In the settlement of the offering, Yongttak and Dontteok are thrown into the sea, while Goridongbantteok is divided between the Simbang and the Lord. Dongramitteok and Bandaegitteok are some of them thrown into the sea or shared with everyone present during the ritual. It is generally recognized that Gut-tteok are shared and adulterated. However, the Yongtteok is not obscene but is thrown into the sea, symbolizing that it is an exclusive victim of the sacrifice that is completely sacrificed to the DragonKing of the Sea. In the case of Goridonbantteok, the IgongBonpuri myth implies the survival of the dead, which can be interpreted as praying for the constant reproduction of seafood as a product and treasure in the sea.
