Jeju(濟州) Island is geopolitically positioned to connect the Japanese archipelago with the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese continent. For this reason, it is easy to think that there were many cases of Japanese pirates in Jeju Island during the period when Japanese pirates were active in East Asia, but according to the records of “Goryeosa(高麗史)”, only once, and not as many times as in the Joseon Dynasty. There are many aspects that have not been fully reviewed so far due to such a small number of “written documents”.
When a literature feed is scarce, the folktale are often used as “verbal historical sources” to complement it. This study is intended to reveal “Japanese pirates(倭寇) of Jeju Island(濟州島)” through folktales of Jeju Island, the origin of the name of the place and the local records of Jeju Island.
The results are as follows:
① There is a high possibility that there have been more cases of Japanese pirates in Jeju Island than official records by the Central Government.
② There have been few cases of Japanese pirates landing deep inland. The damage was relatively small compared to other regions.
③ To the people of Jeju Island, Japanese pirates were an invasion from the outside. The vigilance and fear of Japanese pirates held by Jeju residents were constant.
④ Both the northern and southern routes were used for the invasion of Jeju Island. In particular, the southern route was deeply related to the voyage to the Chinese continent.
⑤ The following arguments are all considered negative:Jeju residents’ participation in Japanese pirates, exchanges between Jeju residents and Japanese pirates, overseas activities of Jeju Residents, etc.
