This article introduces the oral narratives of the Incheon people about the Korean War in the Incheon area and suggests how future research on oral history should proceed. Incheon, a borderland between South and North Korea, was one of the most strategically important regions epitomized by Operation Chromite, and so was devastated as the frontline of the war moved to South of Incheon and then to North. The war caused massive casualties, not limited to soldiers but to civilians who were not even aware of the reason of the war. However, the suffering of the Incheon civilians has not been thoroughly understood despite numerous narratives about it in the region.
Fortunately, Korean War-related research began to reflect oral and written narratives which were previously not well-recognized. This paper focuses on the following three contents regarding oral dictations about the Korean War collected in Incheon. The first is a result from 민간인집단희생사건(Massacre of Civillians) investigation process conducted by (TRC, Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Republic of Korea) from 2006 to 2010, the second is a result from 월남민구술생애조사연구(A Study on Oral Life History of People coming from North Korea) conducted by 역사와공간연구소(The Institute of History and Topos of Yonsei University) from 2014 to 2017, and the last is a result from 6·25한국전쟁아카이브구축을위한구술채록연구(A study of oral records for the establishment of Korean War archive) conducted by 인천문화재단(Incheon Foundation For Arts & Culture) in 2019.
This paper reveals how people’s life and local history unfolded during the wartime, which has not been officially documented. However, its scope of the subject is limited and its results have not been actively converted to research outcomes. In this respect, the new history-writing based on the oral history of underrepresented groups must continue and expand further. It is expected to confront the process of healing and reflection by letting people speak more and reveal more about their history, to incorporate local residents’ experience into local history by shedding light on them, and to balance the debate over the Korean War in Incheon.
