The purpose of this study is to explore the ethical conflicts and coping process experienced by primary school counselors by using the Consensual Qualitative Research(CQR). Nine school counselors working in the primary school in the province of Chungcheongnamdo participated in this study. As a result of the study, four domains and eighteen categories were derived. The four domains are as follows; ethical conflict in counseling, the distinctiveness of the school environment that influences ethical conflict, coping with ethical conflict situation, and needs for ethics education and professional competence improvement. In the first domain, five categories(e.g. conflicts and limits related to confidentiality, difficulties of protecting and managing the information, conflicts caused by the disagreements with managers, teachers and partent, conflicts between client welfare and legal obligation) were derived. In the second domain, four categories were derived: distrust in counselor’s specialty and inappropriate awareness of the role, low awareness and prejudice against counseling, work overload and low sense of belonging, and difficulty in efficiency inspection as an expert and ongoing training due to time limits. In the third domain of coping with ethical conflict situation, the categories such as; coping based on the experiences of the counselors, cooperation with school administrators and colleagues, contact with an external counseling agency, and the client protection priority were derived. Finally, in the forth domain of needs for ethics education and professional competence improvement, three categories were derived: understanding distinctiveness of school counseling and education on ethical coping methods, education for strengthening counselors’ professional competence, and ongoing training and supervision to improve the counselor’s own efficiency. In the end, implications, significance and limitations of the study and directions for follow-up study were discussed.
