The purpose of this study was to confirm the influence of emotional clarity and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (AE) from the relationship between interpersonal traumatic experience and interpersonal relationship among university students using a structural equation model. For this, 368 university students were surveyed about Traumatic Experience Questionnaires, TMMS scale, AEQ scale and KIIP scale. The results were as follows. First, interpersonal trauma, emotional clarity, ambivalence over emotional expression and interpersonal problems all showed significant correlations respectively. Interpersonal trauma had a negative relationship with emotional clarity and it also had a positive relationship with ambivalence over emotional expression, and interpersonal problems. In addition, emotional clarity showed a negative relationship with ambivalence over emotional expression, and interpersonal problem. Furthermore, ambivalence over emotional expression and interpersonal problems showed a positive correlation. Second, the interpersonal trauma experiences of university students had a positive effect on interpersonal problems through mediating emotional clarity and ambivalence over emotional expression. This suggests that the higher the level of interpersonal traumatic experience, the more difficult it is to clearly understand one’s emotions, and later, even the more appropriately expressing the emotions, the more conflict experienced the problems in interpersonal relations. In addition, it provides consideration that university students who have experienced interpersonal trauma should consider their emotions more clearly and smoothly express them in order to reduce negative experiences in interpersonal relationships.
