This paper analyzes North Korea’s space programs that influence recent North Korea ICBM and missile tests such as the Hwasong-14/15. This paper researches North Korean news reports, foreign scientist papers and Korean studies to provide objective and scientific point of views. It intends to analyze North Korean space capability and intention of space development, and threats.
North Korea started a space program to develop long-range missiles to deliver nuclear bombs. North Korea insists on the right of peaceful space development based on the UN Treaty. Because the outcome of the space program influences successful ICBM development, South Korea needs to set up countermeasures to defeat North Korean provocation with ICBM. First, South Korea understands the intent of North Korea’s space development and enhances space surveillance capability. Second, it builds up military protection measures against North Korea space threats. Third, South Korea enhances national space power to maintain space priority over North Korea. This paper will provide an objective and scientific perspective on North Korea space development, threats and consensus for this study area.
